Personal Artists’ Statement

I am emerging slowly into an artist. I say this as if just simply creating a work of art does not define someone as an “artist” which is how I have felt within most of my years studying art. There seemed to always be a shame in creating something, as if it were never good enough, a constant comparison to the person next to me. I am emerging into the realization that we are all artists, and it is defined not only by picking up a pencil and creating mark, but in ways that we live in everyday life; things that spark creativity or inspiration. And so this is what my art starts to represent. I see a reflection of my journey in life, a sense of self-reflection and self-relief. I am inspired by artists such as Henri Matisse, whose intention was expression, playing with and ignoring the “rules” of proportion and color, representing life the way that he thought it should be seen. I feel that my work can inspire someone who is on a similar journey, as the appreciation for uniqueness and contrast can relieve one's thoughts of comparison and insecurity that many artists struggle with.

My philosophy as an artist is to create works of art that come from a place of intuition rather than plan, however when I tend to analyze my own work, themes of objecting societal norms apply as my work fights against natural laws through the use of disproportion, odd pattern, and an overall tension between linework and theme. Along with a constant rebellion against conformist ideologies, I create relationships between these “unlawful” elements and the reality of the world, with themes of abstractness and additions of realistic detail. This relationship creates a dynamic work as the two elements are projected by one another, creating a complex, yet interesting appeal designed to incite the imagination.

My goal is to continue emerging, as my life philosophy creeps into my work, “constantly evolving”. I intend to spread my perspective of positivity, humor, and beauty. My work reflects the constant ins and outs of inspiration running through my brain, as we see a creative side to my work, within fun patterns, or use of bright colors. A sense of realism is present yet abstract elements take over to create a work thriving on contrast. I am attracted to contrast, or juxtaposition and change. The way that experience can contradict itself to create a simple, cohesive “aesthetically pleasing” composition. In this, my work contains a sense of rawness, as society is, in a way, opposed to unlikely elements coming together.
